Happy V-Day! What Food Really Means? Part 2 of 2
What Food Really Means? Part 2 of 2
by Dr. Shawn Byler
There are many reasons we get to adulthood with a less than healthy relationship with food and our body. Parents often give food for a variety of well-intentioned reasons. Unfortunately many of these food related actions confuse little ones, ultimately backfiring.
Food, (usually junk food!!), is regularly given as a reward for “good” or “quiet” behavior at the grocery store, winning a ball game, being kind to a sibling, cleaning a bedroom, or as a demonstration love. Food is given to calm a crying child, distract a child during the throws of a full-blown tantrum, or apologize for a lost parental temper or other parental mistake. The list of motivations prompting parents to reward or comfort a child with food is endless. So, with limited language and understanding, the core lesson a child is left with, “Food makes me feel good or better”. Then, this message etched on your heart and mind…
A loving note to Mothers… If you’re a mom who uses food to satiate beyond what’s necessary for sustaining life, don’t be alarmed or feel bad, there’s really no need. Instead, let this information serve as an opportunity to break an existing cycle, to heal your relationship with food, and try other methods of satiating your children (contact us for additional help if need be at sbyler@dietingbedamned.com). Several solutions are available! You’re a wonderful and loving mother!
